TRENDING IN THE ADVISER ONLINE COMMUNITY

Preparing younger students for future candidacy

My co-adviser and I took over within the last year and were soon bombarded with several parent complaints regarding the induction process at our school. We induct students in the fall of eighth grade, but the problem seems to be that students (and parents) are caught off guard when eligible students receive their application packets. Parents are claiming that there is no prior "training" or knowledge of what students need to be doing/keeping track of so that they are prepared to complete their application as thoroughly as possible. So, we are looking for suggestions as to how we can reach out to the sixth and seventh graders in our building who are on track to be eligible in eighth grade—how might we prepare them to make the application process run more smoothly for them instead of the process catching them off guard?

HONOR SOCIETY TIPS AND TOOLS

Throughout the year, the national office receives questions regarding the eligibility of students who receive accommodations or who have special needs. Students who have received accommodations for their disability—based on their having been identified with one or more physical, emotional, learning, or other disabling conditions—can be considered for membership. If judged by the Faculty Council to meet the selection criteria (scholarship, leadership, service, and character), the students should be selected for membership. (For NJHS, citizenship is added as a fifth criterion.)

Should it be fairly and appropriately judged that the candidate does not meet all the selection criteria, the Faculty Council may consider the candidate for honorary membership. Per Article VIII, Section 3 of the NHS and NJHS Constitutions, honorary membership can be bestowed upon students with disabilities “in recognition of achievement and/or outstanding service rendered to the school in keeping with the purposes of the National Honor Society.” More information is available in both the NHS and NJHS handbooks. Email [email protected] with any questions.
